MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE – To Sacred Heart parishioners, your families, friends and to our visitors and those who follow the newsletters on-line. A special prayer for any who are bereaved or housebound. A prayer of thanksgiving for the faith journey of 2022. There have been joys and sorrows, ups and downs, worries and reassurances. We have revived the sacraments and reopened doors, even though the church building is closed.

Thanks to all our volunteers including regulars and newcomers. Next year we will face difficulties together as we look to see how to move forward with fundraising and repairs. Please think of ways to support us, looking at home for initiatives and further afield for grants.

Let us pray for each other. Let us pray to God-with-us for individuals and families struggling with the financial crisis and other worries.

Church singing in Teddington: every Sunday at Sacred Heart Church

Evensong, plain chant, Motets, Taize chants, folk hymns.
Who doesn’t love beautiful singing? Hearing lovely music encourages us to slow down, bringing a longed for sense of peace in a busy non-stop world.

We’re blessed at Sacred Heart Church in Teddington to have two vibrant, diverse yet complimentary choirs to provide beautiful music and singing to accompany the liturgy.  “I can be moved almost to tears” says Parish Priest Fr Reg Dunkling, of the singing.
The choirs take this as a compliment!

They like to sing classical  music including Latin Motets and pieces by Tallis, Mozart, Schubert as well as more recent, but equally uplifting, Taizé chants along with traditional hymns. The Sacred Heart choir accompanies the 11:15am mass on Sunday. It is led by John Francis. There is a part-Latin sung Mass twice every month, on the 2nd as well as the 4th (n.b not always the last) Sunday in the month.

We sing at different services, and so practice separately, but both choirs enjoy every opportunity to hear to each other sing. They come together for the annual Churches Together in Teddington choir singing event.  This is the only chance (that we know of) to hear many of the local Teddington church choirs sing together in one place.  If you love church singing, its a great introduction to church singing in Teddington. More details available when we know the event dates for 2017.

Thinking of joining a choir? Come along to one of the masses, listen and after the service have a word with Brenda Clements (organist), John Francis (for Sacred Heart Choir)  or Maria O’Brien (for maSH choir).

This is the story of a young girl, told in her own words, who is groomed and trafficked to the UK where she is forced into giving her body for the love of her child, her family and the man she mistakenly believes loves her in return. It’s  powerful and affecting drama giving an at times harrowing but un-missable insight into the plight of so many, not only in the wider world, but here on our UK streets. It’s a must see. And it’s on your doorstep.

Pope Francis has called for peace around the world, as part of his first Easter Sunday message since being elected. Our new Pope toured a packed St Peter’s square in an open top jeep, prior to his inauguration Mass on Tuesday 19th. He signaled his wish to get closer to his people, swapping the traditional bullet proof popemobile for an open-top jeep, descending from it to bless members of the crowd behind the barriers.   “All I ask of you is: Pray for me,” he told the crowd of 500,000 worshippers.

In his Inauguration Mass homily, he called on global leaders and all the people of the world to defend the poor and the weak, who he said are “often the last we think about”.

The first ever Latin American Pope, Francis I, has called for the world to set off on a path of love and asked the faithful to pray for him. Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, former head of the Roman Catholic church in England and Wales, said the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires is a “humble man” whose own “simplicity of life” will inspire others. Benedict XVI: “Thank you and good evening”

Benedict XVI has officially resigned as Pope, saying he will now “simply be a pilgrim who is starting the last phase of his pilgrimage on this earth.” He vowed “unconditional obedience and reverence” to his successor and in his last Tweet he called on people to “always experience the joy that comes from putting Christ at the centre of your lives.” The college of cardinals will now begin the process of electing a new Pope – with Benedict’s successor expected to be in place before Easter.
